What is aquascaping?

Aquascaping is the art of composing living aquatic landscapes in an aquarium. From its Japanese origins to the global movement it has become, here’s everything you need to know — in one comprehensive article.

Definition and Origins

Aquascaping—a portmanteau of aquatic and landscaping—is the art of designing and maintaining living underwater landscapes in an aquarium. It is simultaneously an artistic practice, a scientific discipline, and a passionate hobby that has seen unprecedented global growth since the 1990s.

Unlike a traditional aquarium where the decor is secondary, an aquascape is a three-dimensional artwork conceived as a living painting: every rock, every piece of driftwood, every clump of plants is arranged according to precise aesthetic principles, inspired by real natural landscapes—flooded Amazonian forests, Asian rice paddies, submerged alpine valleys.

The result is a miniature, self-sustaining, and evolving ecosystem, where biology and aesthetics continuously interact: plants absorb the CO₂ produced by fish, which in turn recycle nutrients produced by the plants. It's a fascinatingly complex closed loop of life.

Takashi Amano, the Founding Father

Takashi Amano (1954–2015), a Japanese nature photographer and aquarist, revolutionized the discipline in the 1980s. He founded Aqua Design Amano (ADA) and developed the concept of the Nature Aquarium: applying the aesthetics of Japanese gardens—wabi-sabi, asymmetry, empty space—to the aquarium. In 1994, his book Nature Aquarium World created a worldwide sensation.

Amano introduced nutrient substrate, liquid CO₂ injection, high-power lighting, and Amano shrimp as natural algaecides. These technical and aesthetic innovations remain the standards of the discipline today.

The Major Aquascaping Styles

Aquascaping is not monolithic. Several distinct aesthetic schools have emerged, each with its own rules and philosophy.

The Nature Aquarium

The most influential and widely imitated style. It seeks to evoke a natural landscape (forest, mountain, valley) through an asymmetrical composition based on the rule of thirds. The main rock (the oyaishi) serves as the focal point, surrounded by plants chosen for their complementary textures and heights.

Iwagumi

A sub-style of the Nature Aquarium, Iwagumi (岩組) is absolute minimalism: only rocks arranged in odd numbers according to a precise hierarchy, and a uniform carpet of low-lying plants. Its difficulty lies in its simplicity—there's nowhere to hide a mistake. It is the most challenging style to execute and maintain, and paradoxically the most immediately legible.

The Dutch Style

Originating in the Netherlands in the 1930s, it emphasizes plant richness: plants arranged in colorful rows by height and texture, creating a spectacular vanishing perspective. Dutch competitions evaluate the number of species (ideally more than 15), plant health, and chromatic harmony. It is the most botanically demanding style.

The Jungle Style

Organized chaos and maximum luxuriance. Less codified, it allows for the greatest creative freedom: large-leafed plants, controlled wild growth, colorful tropical fish. It is the most accessible style for beginners—imperfections blend in naturally.

The Biotope

It does not aim for artistic beauty, but for scientific fidelity to a specific natural ecosystem. An Amazon biotope will only use plants, fish, and substrates naturally found in a specific stretch of the river. Geographical consistency is the absolute rule.

Essential Aquascape Components

The Tank

In aquascaping, ultra-clear optical glass (Low Iron / OptiWhite) aquariums with flat bottoms and no black borders are preferred. This glass offers the advantage of a natural hue without green reflections, which enhances the colors of plants and fish. Panoramic formats (width/height ratio ≥ 1.6) provide the best visual depth of field.

The Nutrient Substrate

The substrate is the soil of your ecosystem. Specially formulated substrates containing minerals, clays, and nutrients (N, P, K, Fe) are used to feed the roots long-term. References: ADA Amazonia, JBL ProScape, Tropica Aquarium Soil. Effective lifespan: 2 to 5 years. It is often constructed in two layers: a deep fertilizing base (3–5 cm) and a superficial anchoring layer.

The Hardscape: Rocks and Wood

The hardscape forms the skeleton of the composition. Most commonly used rocks: Seiryu (blue-grey, sharp edges), Dragon (textured, evokes mountains), Ohko (holed, organic appearance), Lava Rock (porous, ideal for mosses). Popular woods: Spiderwood (fine branching tendrils), Mopani (dense and dark), Cholla (hollow, ideal for shrimp).

Beware of calcareous rocks—they release calcium, increase GH and pH, and are incompatible with acid-loving plants and shrimp. Always test a rock with vinegar: if it fizzes, it's calcareous.

Lighting

Lighting is the engine of photosynthesis. High-power LEDs have superseded T5 fluorescents. References: Chihiros WRGB II, Twinstar, ADA Solar RGB, ONF Flat One. Intensity is measured in PAR (μmol/m²/s)—a high-tech aquascape requires 50 to 150 μmol at the bottom. Ideal duration: 8 hours per day, no more. Each additional hour increases the risk of algae.

Filtration

External filters (canister) are preferred, with their hoses hidden in the decor: Eheim Classic, Oase BioMaster, Fluval. General rule: filter the tank volume 5 to 10 times per hour. A 100 L tank requires a flow rate of 500 to 1,000 L/h.

Water Chemistry and CO₂

Mastering water parameters is what distinguishes an experienced aquascaper from a beginner. Water determines the health of plants, fish, and beneficial microorganisms.

The Central Role of CO₂

CO₂ is the most critical parameter. Injection systems (pressurized cylinder + regulator + diffuser) maintain an optimal concentration of 20 to 35 mg/L. Result: plants produce oxygen bubbles (pearling) and plant growth increases by 300 to 500%.

For beginners: liquid CO₂ (Seachem Flourish Excel, ADA Brighty) is a simpler but less effective alternative. This is referred to as a low-tech aquascape, reserved for less demanding plants (mosses, Anubias, Cryptocoryne).

💡 CO₂ indicator—Use a drop checker filled with a bromothymol blue solution. Green = ideal (25–30 mg/L) · Blue = too little · Yellow = too much, dangerous for fish.

Aquatic Plants: The Heart of the Aquascape

Plants fulfill aesthetic, ecological (oxygenation, nitrate absorption), and biochemical (competition with algae) functions. They are classified by their position in the tank.

Carpet Plants — Foreground

  • Hemianthus callitrichoides 'Cuba'—the smallest aquatic plant commercially available (1–2 mm leaves), creeping growth, requires intense light and CO₂.
  • Glossostigma elatinoides—fast growth close to the substrate, widely used in Iwagumi.
  • Eleocharis parvula—filiform stems 3–5 cm tall, natural grass appearance, more tolerant of parameters.
  • Micranthemum 'Monte Carlo'—small, light green round leaves, excellent carpet, ideal compromise between HC Cuba and Glossostigma.

Midground Plants

  • Anubias barteri var. nana—extremely robust, shiny dark leaves, attached to rocks or wood. Ideal for beginners.
  • Cryptocoryne wendtii—rosette plant, many varieties (green, brown, red), very adaptable, slow but steady growth.
  • Bucephalandra spp.—endemic plants from Borneo, iridescent, attached to hardscape, currently very popular.

Background Plants

  • Rotala rotundifolia—thin stems, red leaves under strong light, fast growth, can be trimmed like a bush.
  • Ludwigia repens—bicolor green/red leaves, very colorful, ideal for chromatic contrasts.
  • Vallisneria spiralis—long ribbon-like leaves that undulate in the current, very easy and robust.

Mosses

Attached to rocks and wood, they dress the hardscape in a green mantle with a strikingly natural effect. The essentials: Taxiphyllum barbieri (Java Moss, the most robust), Christmas Moss (festooned clumps), Fissidens fontanus (emerald carpet).

Fish and Invertebrates

In an aquascape, fauna is chosen to complement the composition. Preference is given to species with discreet behavior, tight schooling, and colors that harmonize with the plant landscape.

Iconic Schooling Fish

  • Paracheirodon innesi (Neon Tetra)—blue and red stripe, school of 15–20 minimum, iconic of the planted aquascape.
  • Trigonostigma heteromorpha (Harlequin Rasbora)—robust, characteristic black triangle, elegant school that explores the entire tank.
  • Danio margaritatus (Celestial Pearl Danio)—tiny (2 cm), golden speckles on a dark background, perfect for nano tanks.
  • Boraras brigittae—1.5 cm, flamboyant rubies, ideal with shrimp in nano aquascapes.

Invertebrates — The Cleaning Crew

  • Caridina multidentata (Amano Shrimp)—the most effective against algae, introduced by Amano himself. Size 4–5 cm.
  • Neocaridina davidi (Cherry Shrimp)—bright red, prolific, perfect for nano tanks, consumes algae and organic waste.
  • Otocinclus affinis—small (4 cm) suckermouth fish, specialist in diatom algae on glass and leaves. Indispensable.
Stocking Density Rule: 1 cm of fish (adult size) per 5 liters of water. For a 100 L tank: approximately 15 Neon Tetras + 3 Otocinclus + 10 Amano shrimp.

Composition Principles

The Rule of Thirds and the Golden Triangle

As in photography, the tank is divided into 9 equal zones. Strong elements (main rock, focal point) are placed at the intersections of the lines—never in the center. The golden ratio pushes this principle further: the focal point is placed at 38% / 62% of the width and height. This proportion, omnipresent in nature, produces a harmony intuitively perceived as natural.

Creating Depth

  • Very low plants at the front, progressively taller towards the back.
  • Broad leaves in the foreground, thin and small at the back—they appear more distant.
  • Thicker substrate at the back to create a rising ground line mimicking a hill.
  • Rocks at the back slightly smaller than those in the foreground.
  • A central empty space that "draws" the eye into the decor.

Wabi-sabi: Imperfection as Aesthetics

One of Amano's most profound contributions is the Japanese philosophy of wabi-sabi: the acceptance and celebration of imperfection and asymmetry. A perfectly symmetrical aquascape is dead. Slightly asymmetrical, with its calculated irregularities, it is alive and authentic. One does not seek perfect rocks, but cracked and weathered stones. Mosses are allowed to overflow slightly, as if they have been there for years.

Weekly Maintenance

An aquascape is a constantly evolving organism. Regular maintenance is what separates a thriving tank from a neglected one.

  • Partial water change (20–30%)—The most important task. Dilutes nitrates, provides fresh minerals, stimulates plant growth and vibrancy of colors.
  • Glass cleaning—Magnet or scraper to remove algae deposited on the inner walls.
  • Plant trimming—Cut overgrown stems, pinch carpets to keep them dense and low. This is one of the most technical gestures in aquascaping.
  • Siphoning waste—Siphon out organic matter accumulated between plants and on the substrate.
  • Parameter checking—CO₂ (drop checker), pH, temperature. Identify any drift before it becomes a problem.
Algae: the 3 most frequent causes—1. Too much light (reduce duration). 2. Irregular CO₂ (synchronize with lighting timer). 3. Too few plants (plant densely from the start—this is the universal solution).

Mistakes to Absolutely Avoid

  • Planting too little at startup—An under-planted tank will be overrun by algae in the first few weeks. Plant densely from day one.
  • Ignoring the nitrogen cycle—Allow the tank to cycle for 3 to 6 weeks before introducing fish.
  • Too many hours of light—8 hours per day maximum. Each additional hour increases the risk of algae.
  • Irregular CO₂—Fluctuations are more damaging than a consistently low level. Use a timer.
  • Calcareous rocks—Always test before introducing into the tank.
  • Neglecting water changes — Essential, even in the best-equipped tank in the world.
  • Overstocking with fish — Too much organic waste = guaranteed algae. Restraint is a virtue.
  • Intervening too often — Each manipulation disturbs the ecosystem. Plan your weekly interventions and don't fiddle daily.
